Funeral Services for Joy Brindley

Joyce Anne “Joy” Brindley (nee Rothwell) of Glenboro, MB, formerly of Argyle, MB passed away in the Glenboro Personal Care Home on Monday, March 4, 2024 at the age of 92.

Joy was born on the farm in Argyle on September 1, 1931 to Tom and Liz Rothwell. She attended Brant Argyle School and on her first day, she came home and announced that she was going to marry Richard “Dick” Brindley, which she did on June 20, 1952.

She lived and worked in Winnipeg for a couple of years after she graduated and then lived in Warren and Woodlands for several years. In February of 1964 she and Dick purchased Brindley’s General Store in Argyle. It was just a small-town general store with a coffee bar, but it quickly became the hub of the community.  Joy ran the store every day from 8:30 am to 5 pm until Dick came home from his job with the Department of Highways and he would take over until 10 pm closing.

The family lived behind the store and over the course of several years Joy, with the help of her mom Liz, renovated every room. Anyone who ever enjoyed the hospitality of Brindley’s at the General will attest to the fact that it wasn’t the decorations, but the warmth and laughter that made all who crossed the threshold feel welcome.

Joy was an avid curler and, in the winter, most weekends were spent at a bonspiel. She skipped with Shirley Irwin at third, Winnifred Stuart at second and for a couple of years her daughter Shelley at lead. They didn’t win every game but sure had fun trying.

When Dick passed away in 1996, a few years later she decided to move to Glenboro to be closer to Arlie, Shelley and their families. She then followed her grandchildren’s activities across the province. From hockey, volleyball and track to music festivals, drama productions and everything else the kids were into. She made friends and danced in every small town around. When Joy wasn’t dancing, she did a bit of travelling.  She visited Shelley in Saskatoon, Prince George, Victoria and Portland, went on a cruise with her cousin Jean de Laroque and enjoyed many casino weekends with her sister-in-law Anne Brindley.

Left to mourn her passing are her daughters Shelley Westwood & Arlie (Moray) Jamieson all of Glenboro, grandchildren Adam Ross, Liam Ross, Dayna (Shaun) Webster, Turner (Cassandra) Jamieson, great grandchildren Alexa and Jaxen Ross, Tia, Nash and Rome Webster, Halee and Nixon Jamieson and many nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. She was predeceased by her husband Dick in 1996, parents Tom and Liz Rothwell, in-laws Sam and Marion Brindley, brother Ben Rothwell, son-in-law Jim Westwood and sister & brother-in-law Anne and Ken Brindley.
